The global e-commerce landscape reached an impressive milestone of $5.8 trillion in 2023, with forecasts pointing toward an increase to $6.3 trillion by the end of 2024. Turkey, recognizing the immense potential in this sector, is actively working to enhance its share of the global e-commerce trade, according to the Turkish Minister of Trade at a recent e-commerce summit in Istanbul. This strategic move aims to further establish Turkey as a key player in the digital economy while fueling trade growth and innovation.

In recent years, Turkey’s e-commerce sector has experienced remarkable growth, with nearly half the population—49.5%—engaging in online shopping over the past year. Since 2019, the value of Turkey’s e-commerce trade has expanded from $3.9 billion to $53.9 billion in 2023, reflecting a 717% increase in e-commerce businesses. This surge has been supported by a rise in e-commerce exports, which now constitute 2.6% of the nation’s total goods exports—a significant increase from 0.91% in 2022. By year’s end, this figure is expected to reach 3%, with a long-term target of 10% by 2028.

These impressive gains reflect Turkey’s dedication to establishing a robust and balanced trade environment that strengthens both domestic and international markets. With new regulations aimed at boosting competition and ensuring sustainability in the retail and digital trade sectors, the Ministry of Trade is creating a solid foundation for the country’s ongoing growth in e-commerce.

Alongside this, Turkey is implementing stronger consumer protection measures and fostering fair practices in key sectors such as food, real estate, and automotive. These efforts are geared toward reinforcing trust in e-commerce, which will drive even greater engagement from both domestic and global consumers.

Turkey’s initiatives in promoting a sustainable and competitive trade environment will likely support the broader expansion of global e-commerce, solidifying the country’s role as an influential player in digital and traditional trade markets.
