In a significant diplomatic move, Australia and Vietnam have announced an upgrade in their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This development, revealed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday, includes the commencement of annual discussions on minerals, underscoring efforts to diversify supply chains away from China.
The enhanced partnership signifies a milestone in Vietnam’s “bamboo diplomacy,” aimed at strengthening ties with major global players amid escalating international tensions.
According to reports from the official Vietnam News Agency, the elevation of ties reflects unprecedented levels of mutual political trust between the two nations.
The comprehensive strategic partnership will facilitate expanded cooperation across various domains, spanning climate, environment, energy, defense, security, economic engagement, and education, as outlined in a joint statement issued by both countries. Additionally, Albanese and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh witnessed the exchange of 12 cooperation documents covering sectors such as energy, minerals, agriculture, banking, and finance.
Australia’s significant role as a major producer of critical minerals, vital for various industries including electronics and automotive, aligns with Vietnam’s abundant untapped mineral deposits. Notably, an annual ministerial dialogue on energy and minerals is set to drive collaboration in energy and resources sectors, particularly in critical minerals supply chains.
Vietnam’s resources, including rare earths, have attracted interest from Australian miners. Blackstone Minerals Ltd. and Australian Strategic Materials are among the entities that have initiated partnerships with Vietnamese counterparts for rare earth projects, demonstrating the burgeoning potential for cooperation in this realm.
However, recent legal challenges have cast uncertainties on some rare earth deals, highlighting the need for transparent and reliable business practices.
Furthermore, Australia’s role as a key coal supplier to Vietnam, a nation heavily reliant on coal for power generation, underscores the breadth of bilateral economic ties.
With this elevated partnership, Australia and Vietnam are poised to strengthen their positions in the global trade landscape, fostering greater economic resilience and cooperation.
