Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed optimism regarding the enhancement of the Central European Free Trade Agreement during an interview ahead of a summit for the Western Balkans hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This initiative aims to strengthen economic integration and align the region more closely with European Union standards as Albania works towards its goal of EU membership by 2030.

Prime Minister Rama emphasized the importance of refining the free trade agreement mechanism to facilitate smoother trade and movement within the Western Balkans. The summit, which includes discussions with leaders from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia, is part of a broader effort to integrate the Western Balkans into European Union-compatible policies, enhancing cooperation and stability in the region.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently convened meetings with counterparts from these six countries, making notable strides toward resolving tensions between Serbia and Kosovo. She highlighted the potential for improved mobility of people, goods, and services, alongside initiatives to enhance travel arrangements for young people and better recognition of professional qualifications across the region.

These developments represent a significant step towards greater economic stability and collaboration in the Western Balkans, addressing the needs of a region that continues to navigate complex historical relationships. The European Union’s commitment to fostering cooperation is essential for ensuring a prosperous future for these nations.

In addition to trade discussions, Prime Minister Rama revealed Albania’s agreement with Italy to establish reception centers for refugees arriving in Italy, contributing to efforts to manage migration into the European Union. While acknowledging the possibility of similar arrangements with Germany, he noted that current capacities are limited, suggesting the need for Germany to seek other partnerships.

As the Western Balkans moves closer to European Union integration, these trade advancements and collaborative efforts signal a promising future for economic growth and stability in the region.
