India is optimistic about finalizing a long-anticipated free trade agreement with the European Union by the end of 2025, according to a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to Cyprus. The development marks a key milestone in India’s commitment to strengthening international trade relations and enhancing its presence in European markets.

During a joint appearance with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the growing opportunities for economic collaboration between India and Cyprus. “We are working on finalising a mutually beneficial India-EU trade agreement by the end of this year,” he noted, highlighting shared goals of prosperity and connectivity.

The visit also reinforced India’s interest in the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor, a strategic trade route that integrates maritime and rail links to streamline cross-regional commerce. Both leaders agreed that this initiative will contribute to regional progress and mutual growth.

President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’ strong commitment to supporting India’s integration into European trade networks. He expressed the nation’s willingness to serve as a key entry point for Indian goods into the European Union and a hub for transshipment activities. Cyprus is scheduled to hold the rotating presidency of the EU in early 2026 and has identified the strengthening of EU-India trade ties as a top priority during its term.

This development is expected to unlock significant economic potential, boosting trade flows, logistics cooperation, and investment opportunities between India and the European Union.
