Japan’s agricultural, forestry, and fishery exports reached an all-time high in 2024, showcasing the country’s resilience and adaptability in the global market. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) reported a 3.7% increase in exports, totaling 1.507 trillion yen ($9.7 billion), marking the twelfth consecutive year of growth.
This success reflects Japan’s expanding trade relationships, with the United States emerging as the top export destination for the first time in 20 years. Exports to the U.S. surged by 17.8% to 242.9 billion yen, while strong demand in Vietnam and Thailand contributed to over 23% growth. Additionally, sales to Taiwan, South Korea, and Europe increased between 11-20%, driven by the rising popularity of Japanese food products such as seasonings and green tea.
Despite market shifts, Japan’s seafood sector demonstrated adaptability, with increased exports of scallops and other products to the U.S., Taiwan, and Vietnam, effectively mitigating challenges in certain regions. The Japanese government continues to strengthen global trade networks, ensuring diverse market access and reinforcing Japan’s role as a key player in international food exports.
With ongoing efforts to expand commercial channels and foster new trade opportunities, Japan’s food export industry is set to thrive, further enhancing its contributions to global trade and supply chains.
