Paraguay has made a significant leap into the international citrus market with its inaugural export of Persian limes, marking a new era for the country’s agricultural trade. A shipment of 26 tonnes, sourced from the Concepción region, has successfully reached the Argentine market after meeting stringent international quality and phytosanitary standards.

This achievement is the result of over a decade of dedicated efforts to improve the quality and export potential of Paraguayan agricultural products. The region’s unique climatic conditions, particularly near the tropics, provide the perfect environment for producing premium-quality limes.

The initial consignment was harvested from 130 hectares of certified land, with 20 additional hectares currently being developed. Paraguay aims to maintain consistent production and uphold high-quality standards to meet both local and global demand.

The government is also focused on expanding its reach to the Brazilian market, working to align phytosanitary requirements within Mercosur. With treatments such as washing, disinfection, and waxing, Paraguay is demonstrating its commitment to meeting international trade standards.

Looking to the future, Paraguay is broadening its agricultural export portfolio, with plans to begin cabbage exports next year and explore opportunities for a variety of other crops.

“This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Paraguay’s exports,” officials remarked. “Through collaboration between producers and government support, the country is well-positioned to grow and diversify its agricultural offerings on the global stage.”
