Germany continues to bolster its support for sustainable trade by contributing EUR 600,000 (approximately CHF 560,000) to the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF). This contribution is part of a multi-year agreement aimed at enhancing the ability of developing economies and least-developed countries (LDCs) to meet international food safety, animal, and plant health standards. Through this, Germany aims to expand access to global and regional markets for these countries, fostering growth and development in the global trade arena.
The new funding will directly contribute to the implementation of the STDF’s Strategy for 2025-2030, which focuses on strengthening sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) capacity. This initiative is designed to enable countries to address emerging challenges and seize new opportunities, fostering safer, more inclusive trade that benefits economies worldwide. By supporting SPS improvements, Germany is contributing to a global effort that enhances trade and supports sustainable economic growth.
The contribution also seeks to address the challenges that developing countries face due to climate change, economic uncertainty, and the evolving global trade landscape. With the backing of Germany, the STDF can focus on facilitating trade that drives food security, boosts income generation, and creates job opportunities, all while supporting the development of resilient agricultural and food systems.
The STDF, a global partnership comprising the FAO, WOAH, WHO, World Bank Group, and WTO, works to improve SPS systems and promote trade by ensuring the safety and quality of agricultural products. With Germany’s continued involvement, the initiative will play a key role in helping countries better integrate into global value chains, ensuring they can fully participate in global trade markets and achieve sustainable growth.
By aligning with international trade standards, Germany and the STDF are helping developing economies improve the safety of food systems, increase trade opportunities, and contribute to a brighter, more sustainable global marketplace.
