South Africa has initiated a safeguard investigation into certain flat-rolled products of iron, non-alloy steel, or other alloy steel, as reported to the WTO’s Committee on Safeguards on February 29, 2024.
In this notification, South Africa outlined the procedure for interested parties to participate in the investigation. Interested parties are required to make themselves known within 20 days of the investigation’s initiation. Additionally, they can submit relevant information or request a hearing within the same timeframe to the Directorate: Trade Remedies II at the DTI Campus in Pretoria.
A safeguard investigation aims to assess whether increased imports of a product are causing or threatening to cause serious injury to a domestic industry. During the investigation, importers, exporters, and other stakeholders have the opportunity to present evidence and viewpoints.
A WTO member can implement safeguard measures, such as temporary import restrictions, only if the investigation confirms that increased imports are indeed causing or threatening serious injury to the domestic industry.
This initiative underscores South Africa’s commitment to safeguarding its domestic steel industry and ensuring fair trade practices within the global market.
