Botswana Unified Revenue Service: Transparency and Crime Prevention

About the Publication

Published Date: December 2024

The Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) has taken a proactive role in enhancing transparency and combating counterfeit and transnational crime. With innovative transparency initiatives like an online customs portal and public awareness campaigns, BURS has streamlined processes and engaged stakeholders. A dedicated hotline, coupled with partnerships like the MOU with South Africa’s SARS, underscores BURS’s commitment to secure trade facilitation.

Recent legal reforms, such as the Customs and Excise (Amendment) Act 2022, empower BURS to use advanced technology in crime prevention. Sustainable development is also a priority, with paperless systems, solar panels, and recycling programs reducing the agency’s environmental footprint.

Through blockchain-based tracking systems and risk-based customs clearance approaches, BURS has expedited trade while ensuring accountability. Their efforts have yielded significant results, including the seizure of over P10 million worth of counterfeit goods in 2023. These multi-faceted initiatives position BURS as a regional leader in securing global trade.
