Dominica is taking a significant step to enhance its agricultural output and trade opportunities by expanding its white potato production for the 2024/25 season. The Ministry of Agriculture has announced plans to import 1,160 bags of high-quality seed potatoes, including popular varieties, to support the cultivation of over 40 acres of white potatoes from December 2024 to March 2025.

This initiative aims to strengthen both local agriculture and the country’s position in regional and international markets. With ideal soil and climate conditions selected for cultivation, this move is expected to boost the quality and volume of potatoes, creating new trade opportunities.

Over 125 farmers are expected to engage in this project, benefiting from training, farming inputs, and market access facilitation to ensure a successful harvest. This collaboration underscores the commitment to enhancing productivity and promoting agricultural exports.

The seed potatoes are set to arrive on November 22, followed by necessary quarantine and phytosanitary testing. Farmers interested in participating are encouraged to pre-register, ensuring a well-prepared and efficient planting season.

Dominica’s efforts reflect the country’s growing capacity to meet both domestic demands and international trade expectations, reinforcing its role in global agricultural trade.
