Germany is taking a proactive step to bolster trade opportunities for developing economies and least-developed countries (LDCs) by pledging EUR 150,000 (approximately CHF 140,000) in 2024 to the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF). This initiative aims to strengthen sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) capacities, enabling these nations to access global and regional markets more effectively.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Germany’s Ambassador to the WTO, Carmen Heidecke, underscoring the German government’s commitment to fostering inclusive trade practices.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala praised Germany’s dedication, stating, “Germany demonstrates its commitment to helping developing countries and LDCs maximize the benefits of trade by improving their ability to comply with SPS requirements. This contribution will empower them to participate more actively in global agricultural markets, benefiting thousands of farmers.”

Ambassador Heidecke noted the vital contributions of the STDF in supporting developing countries and LDCs as they implement SPS standards and tackle significant global challenges. The German Ministry for Food and Agriculture expressed enthusiasm for continuing its support to enhance the STDF’s impactful projects.

Since 2006, Germany has contributed CHF 10.6 million to the STDF and CHF 38.5 million to various WTO trust funds over the last 25 years. The STDF is a collaborative effort involving organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the World Bank Group, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the WTO. This partnership focuses on facilitating safe and inclusive trade, contributing to sustainable economic growth and food security, and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Germany’s investment not only reflects its commitment to global trade development but also empowers developing economies to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
