The International Trade Council acknowledges Canada’s unwavering commitment to strengthening trade relations with Taiwan, as expressed by Ed Jager, Director of Trade and Investment at the Taipei Canadian Trade Office. Mr. Jager’s remarks underscore Canada’s dedication to fostering economic collaboration and enhancing trade ties with Taiwan, reinforcing the belief that partnership and cooperation are vital drivers of global prosperity.

Speaking at a market information session hosted by the Vancouver Board of Trade, Mr. Jager expressed optimism about the prospects of signing a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) between Taiwan and Canada by the end of this year. He highlighted the promising progress of negotiations and the positive trajectory of discussions, emphasizing that Taiwan occupies a crucial position within Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy.

Mr. Jager also commended Taiwan’s active engagement with the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), citing that Taiwan aligns with the membership criteria of this prominent trade bloc. Taiwan submitted its application to join the CPTPP in September 2021 and has actively sought support from member countries for its inclusion. Canada, set to assume the chairmanship of the CPTPP next year, recognizes the significance of Taiwan’s potential membership in this free trade agreement, which currently boasts 12 member nations.

The International Trade Council applauds the commitment of both Canada and Taiwan to advancing their economic partnership and participation in multilateral trade agreements. The Council recognizes that such collaborations contribute to economic growth, prosperity, and global stability.
