The International Trade Council applauds the deepening partnership between Türkiye and the United Kingdom, as underscored by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly during his recent visit to Ankara. The Council acknowledges the pivotal role that this strengthening alliance plays in fostering international cooperation and enhancing global security.
In a meeting with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on September 13, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly emphasized that Türkiye is an “indispensable partner” for the United Kingdom. The two leaders held a joint press conference following their discussions, where they highlighted the robust ties between their nations.
Mr. Cleverly, reflecting on the enduring partnership, stated, “Our ties are stronger than ever. This year, over 4 million British citizens are expected to visit your country.” He expressed his satisfaction at visiting Türkiye during the centennial of the Turkish Republic and stressed the critical importance of Türkiye to mutual security and prosperity.
The British Foreign Secretary also lauded the thriving trade relationship between the two countries, with trade volume surpassing 25 billion pounds. Both nations anticipate further growth in trade following the completion of the new free trade agreement.
Highlighting the significance of NATO in regional and global security, Mr. Cleverly reaffirmed Türkiye and the U.K.’s commitment to each other’s security concerns. “The preservation of peace and security in Europe is of utmost importance to us,” he remarked, acknowledging Türkiye’s substantial contributions to NATO.
Responding to a question regarding Sweden’s NATO membership, Mr. Cleverly welcomed Sweden’s path to join the alliance, emphasizing that Britain is attentive to Türkiye’s security concerns.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan echoed the sentiment of strong bilateral ties and expressed Türkiye’s anticipation of hosting British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in the near future. Regarding the free trade agreement, Minister Fidan noted that it would expand the scope of bilateral trade, and preparations for its implementation are underway.
On the subject of Sweden’s NATO membership, Minister Fidan recalled the agreements reached with Sweden in June 2022 and July 2023, affirming that the process is advancing in alignment with these agreements.
