In a significant move, India has approved the export of 1,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Namibia. This decision, announced on Monday, allows the export through a designated national cooperative despite a general ban on non-basmati white rice exports since July 20, 2023. The export ban was originally implemented to boost domestic supply.

However, India has been granting export permissions to certain countries to meet their food security needs upon request. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) confirmed this specific allowance for Namibia, emphasizing the country’s commitment to supporting global food security.

India’s export of non-basmati white rice was valued at USD 122.7 million during April-May and USD 852.53 million for the entire 2023-24 period. Previously, India has granted similar permissions to countries such as Nepal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Seychelles.

The multi-state cooperative society facilitating this export is promoted by several prominent cooperative societies in India, ensuring efficient management and distribution.
