The U.S. shrimp market continues to show positive signs of resilience, with a steady flow of imports from top global exporters. In October 2024, the U.S. imported 164.3 million pounds (74,544 metric tons) of shrimp, slightly down from the previous year’s 168 million pounds (76,187 metric tons). Year-to-date figures indicate a 4.4% decrease compared to 2023, with total imports reaching 1.37 billion pounds (622,531 metric tons), reflecting the evolving dynamics of global trade.

 

India, Indonesia, and Ecuador remain key players in the shrimp export market. India saw a modest 2% year-over-year increase in exports to the U.S., reaching 67.1 million pounds (30,457 metric tons). Indonesia also experienced a 1% growth, exporting 29 million pounds (13,140 metric tons). While Ecuador’s exports faced a slight decline of 26.6%, the market’s diversity in suppliers offers a positive outlook for trade flexibility and continued market access for various exporting nations.

 

In addition to these major exporters, countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, and Argentina also contribute to the robust shrimp supply chain. Vietnam exported 18.4 million pounds (8,363 metric tons), while Thailand, Mexico, and Argentina provided steady volumes, underscoring the global reach and stability of the shrimp trade.

 

Ensuring the safety and quality of seafood imports remains a top priority for the U.S., with the FDA closely monitoring shipments for compliance with food safety standards. Although there were reports of entry line refusals due to banned antibiotics, this underscores the industry’s commitment to maintaining high-quality standards and reinforcing the integrity of global seafood trade.

 

This steady growth in shrimp imports highlights the continued expansion of international trade, with suppliers strengthening their position by meeting evolving market demands and quality assurance expectations. As the shrimp trade continues to diversify and grow, global exporters are well-positioned to meet increasing consumer demands and contribute to a sustainable and prosperous trade ecosystem.
