In response to recent concerns over contaminated durian exports, the Thai government is implementing stricter quality control measures to safeguard its agricultural trade relationships. This initiative follows China’s rejection of a 64-ton shipment of Thai durians found to contain Basic Yellow 2 (BY2), a carcinogenic dye, in February 2025.
During a recent Cabinet meeting, Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan and Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat discussed the incident, emphasizing the need for rigorous testing protocols to prevent future occurrences.
The Department of Agriculture has responded by suspending operations of 26 durian packing facilities implicated in the contamination. Additionally, comprehensive inspections for BY2 residues and cadmium levels are now mandatory for all durian shipments destined for China.
These measures aim to restore confidence in Thailand’s durian exports and ensure compliance with international food safety standards.
