The International Trade Council acknowledges the concerns of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) regarding the negative impact of tariffs on the industry. Rick Helfenbein, CEO of the AAFA, has urged for the immediate removal of tariffs that were imposed on $112 billion of Chinese goods, such as shoes and clothing, in September.
Helfenbein expressed his concerns in a statement to the BBC, saying, "Our big issue right now is we've been under tariffs since September 1, and we are facing more tariffs potentially on December 15th. Unless those things go away, then the Grinch will have officially stolen our Christmas." While excited about the "interim trade deal," Helfenbein noted that it does not seem particularly helpful to the apparel industry.
The AAFA CEO emphasized the need for "immediate relief" from the latest wave of tariffs and requested no fresh duties in December. "If we get that, then I will call this a good trade deal, and I will be really proud of it," he added.
