The Philippines continues to make significant strides in international trade, with a remarkable 2.7 percent increase in pineapple exports in 2023, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This growth has reinforced the Philippines' position as the world's second-largest exporter of pineapples, highlighting the country’s expanding role in global agriculture markets.
In 2023, the Philippines exported an impressive 600,000 metric tons (MT) of pineapples, up from 580,000 MT in 2022. This volume represents a substantial 18.8 percent of the total global pineapple exports, which reached 3.2 million MT last year. The steady increase in exports reflects the country’s successful trade strategies and commitment to delivering high-quality agricultural products to the world.
China emerged as the leading destination for Philippine pineapples, securing 43 percent of the country’s exports, up from 40 percent in 2022. Japan and South Korea also played significant roles, with market shares of 30 percent and 14 percent, respectively. These strong trade relationships underscore the Philippines' growing influence in the Asian market.
The FAO report highlights the success of the MD2 pineapple variety, which is cultivated in the Philippines. Its long shelf life, year-round production, and excellent price-to-quality ratio have made it a preferred choice in international markets. This success story showcases the Philippines' ability to meet global demand with premium products, further enhancing its trade partnerships.
Additionally, the average export value of Philippine pineapples rose by 3.8 percent to $593 per ton in 2023, reflecting the increasing recognition of the fruit’s quality on the global stage. The country’s total pineapple production also grew by 1 percent, reaching 2.94 million MT, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, further supporting the nation’s strong export performance.
This positive trend in pineapple exports is a testament to the Philippines' growing role in global trade, as it continues to deliver high-quality products that meet the demands of international markets.
