During a bilateral meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and China signed a landmark protocol establishing phytosanitary requirements for the export of fresh durians, as reported by Reuters. Previously, Malaysian exporters were only permitted to ship frozen durian products to China.

According to the South China Morning Post and The Star, the new agreement outlines rapid customs clearance protocols and strict biosecurity inspections at Chinese ports of entry. These measures are designed to ensure the highly perishable fresh fruit can clear customs quickly and safely, minimizing transit delays.

Channel NewsAsia reports that the deal is expected to open up a highly lucrative market for Malaysian agricultural exporters. By establishing clear biosecurity guidelines and expedited customs clearance, both nations aim to facilitate smoother agricultural trade while maintaining robust biosecurity standards. The rapid clearance protocols are particularly crucial given the highly perishable nature of fresh durian, which requires swift handling to preserve its quality and flavor.
