Norman Friend is the Founder and President of Franchise 101 Incorporated, a distinguished franchise consulting firm specializing in assisting companies with franchising their businesses and expanding internationally. With nearly 40 years of experience in the franchising industry, Norman has established himself as a leading expert, recognized by the courts in Canada as an ‘Expert Franchise Witness.’

Norman’s journey in franchising began as a franchisee, eventually leading him to the role of President at a national franchise company. His transition into consulting saw him founding Franchise 101 Incorporated, where he has since played a pivotal role in negotiating the sale of over 250 businesses, including unit franchises, sub-franchises, and international master licenses. He has also facilitated the sale of two Canadian franchise networks and has been a prominent speaker at seminars and conferences across North America, including the U.S. Department of Trade and Commerce.

Educated at the University of British Columbia, where he completed the Real Estate Licensing and Mortgage Brokerage Programs, as well as a Business Consulting Program in the UK, Norman’s extensive experience in franchising has been complemented by his formal qualifications. He has authored two bestselling franchise books in Canada and is celebrated by Global Franchise Magazine as a leading expert in Canadian franchising.

Among his notable achievements, Norman has received the Century 21 'Achievement in Management Award' and has been recognized by the Canada Home Builders' Association for his 'Outstanding Contribution to the Housing Industry.

Norman has witnessed significant industry changes, notably the impact of the Internet on franchise recruitment and the rise of marketing-driven franchises. He foresees continued growth in this area, along with innovative financing solutions and potential closures in established food service franchise chains.

Embracing new technologies, Norman is particularly excited about the potential of 3D printing within the industry. He advises newcomers to focus on strategic planning and opportunism while avoiding distractions that can detract from growth objectives. Norman handles setbacks by carefully selecting clients who align with his values and business principles.

Inspired by Peter Thomas, who introduced the Century 21 Real Estate franchise to Canada, Norman draws from his own experiences and values to guide his professional endeavors. Outside of work, he enjoys walking around his picturesque harbor with his Boxer dog, Bailey, engaging with diverse individuals, and recently exploring 3D printing with his son.
