The National Customs Directorate of Uruguay (DNA) is a key agency in enforcing customs and trade laws, playing a crucial role in fighting counterfeit goods and transnational crime. DNA has implemented several initiatives to ensure transparency and streamline trade processes, such as launching an online portal for customs declarations and a public awareness campaign to educate the public on counterfeit dangers. These efforts aim to improve efficiency and public compliance with regulations.
Internationally, DNA strengthens cooperation through its membership in the World Customs Organization (WCO) and agreements with neighboring countries like Argentina, sharing intelligence to combat cross-border crime. In 2022, the Uruguayan government passed the Customs Law, empowering DNA with advanced technology and legal provisions to prevent smuggling and enhance collaboration with domestic law enforcement. Sustainable development initiatives, such as paperless systems and solar panel installations, have reduced DNA’s environmental impact. Additionally, DNA’s use of blockchain technology and its work to combat counterfeit goods has enhanced trade facilitation and strengthened capacity building efforts, cementing Uruguay’s leadership in the fight against counterfeit trade.
