Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is the primary agency in the United Kingdom responsible for enforcing customs and trade laws, and it has been a leader in combating counterfeit goods and transnational crime. Through various transparency initiatives, including an online portal for customs declarations and a public awareness campaign, HMRC has enhanced trade efficiency and public awareness of the dangers of counterfeit goods. These efforts reflect the agency’s commitment to ensuring legitimate trade and compliance with customs regulations.

HMRC’s international cooperation is bolstered by its membership in the World Customs Organization (WCO) and partnerships with neighboring countries like France to combat cross-border crime. In 2022, the UK government passed the Customs and Trade Act, strengthening HMRC’s powers with advanced technology and tighter penalties for customs offenses. HMRC also focuses on sustainable development by introducing paperless clearance systems and energy-efficient practices. The agency has been actively combating counterfeit goods, seizing over £1 million worth of counterfeit items in 2023 alone. HMRC continues to invest in capacity building to enhance its efforts in combating counterfeit and transnational crime.
