Nigerian Customs Service: A Leading Force Against Counterfeit and Transnational Crime

About the Publication

Published Date: December 2024

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has emerged as a leader in combating counterfeit and transnational crime, driving significant changes to improve trade laws enforcement in the country. NCS has taken bold steps in promoting transparency, such as publishing the Nigerian Customs Tariff Handbook and implementing online portals for customs declarations. This initiative has increased efficiency in customs processes and enhanced the exchange of accurate data between agencies, thanks to the WCO’s Data Model. Additionally, the NCS has improved stakeholder trust through a customs hotline, allowing reporting of irregularities and increasing accountability.

International cooperation has been at the core of NCS’s strategy, including partnerships with countries like Ghana to combat cross-border crime and regional workshops on counterfeit goods organized by the WCO. Through legal reforms such as the Customs and Excise (Amendment) Act, the NCS has been empowered to utilize advanced technologies for better enforcement. As part of its commitment to sustainability, NCS has implemented paperless clearance systems and energy-efficient practices, further demonstrating its role as a trailblazer in trade facilitation and environmental responsibility.
