About the Publication

Published Date: December 2024

Namibia Customs and Excise has been a key player in combating counterfeit goods and transnational crime within the country and across the region. As the main agency responsible for enforcing customs and tax laws, the agency has launched numerous initiatives to both curb illicit trade and support legitimate commerce. Transparency efforts, including an informative website and online portal for submitting customs declarations, have greatly enhanced the efficiency and openness of its operations. In 2022, Namibia Customs launched an extensive public awareness campaign, using radio, TV, and social media to educate the public on the dangers of counterfeit goods.

International cooperation has been central to the agency’s success. Through partnerships with neighboring countries, including a Memorandum of Understanding with the South African Revenue Service, Namibia Customs strengthens cross-border crime fighting. Legal reforms such as the 2022 Customs and Excise Act have provided the agency with additional powers and penalties to combat transnational crime.

Sustainability is also a priority for Namibia Customs, with initiatives like a paperless clearance system, solar panel installations, and energy-efficient systems helping to reduce its environmental footprint. Additionally, the agency has introduced technology such as a blockchain-based system to enhance trade facilitation, secure goods tracking, and prevent smuggling.
