The Malta Customs Department (MCD) has been a leader in combating counterfeit goods and transnational crime through a variety of proactive measures. MCD has implemented initiatives to increase transparency, such as launching an online portal for customs declarations and an awareness campaign to educate the public on the dangers of counterfeit goods. Furthermore, the department is a key player in international cooperation, signing agreements with neighboring countries like Italy and participating in regional workshops organized by the World Customs Organization (WCO). Legal reforms, such as the Customs Ordinance, have empowered MCD to take stronger actions against counterfeit goods and smuggling activities.
MCD also emphasizes sustainable development with initiatives such as a paperless clearance system, energy-efficient facilities, and the installation of solar panels. To enhance trade facilitation, MCD has introduced a risk-based approach to customs clearance and a blockchain-based system for tracking the origin of goods. Their efforts have been further strengthened by a dedicated anti-counterfeiting unit and successful operations that resulted in significant counterfeit goods seizures. MCD continues to invest in capacity building through training programs and international partnerships.
