About the Publication

Published Date: December 2024

The Egyptian Customs Authority (ECA) has become a leader in combating counterfeit goods and transnational crime, implementing several initiatives that focus on transparency, international cooperation, and sustainability. ECA’s transparency measures include the publication of the Egyptian Customs Tariff Handbook, the creation of an online portal for customs declarations, and the adoption of the WCO’s Data Model for improved data accuracy. Additionally, the ECA has introduced a hotline for stakeholders to report concerns, fostering trust and responsiveness in customs operations.

On the international stage, the ECA has strengthened its cooperation with neighboring countries and global organizations like the WCO, through agreements and participation in workshops. The agency has also embraced legal reforms, such as the Customs and Excise (Amendment) Act, enhancing its powers to combat smuggling. Sustainability efforts include a paperless clearance system and green customs initiatives, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of customs operations. ECA’s efforts not only curb illegal trade but also improve trade facilitation through innovations like a single window system, optimizing the customs clearance process.
