The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has significantly expanded its international trade network by finalizing two major Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with Colombia and South Korea. These agreements, signed in rapid succession in July 2026, align with the Gulf nation’s strategic push to diversify its economy away from oil and establish deeper ties across South America and Asia. By securing these pacts, the UAE continues to build out its global economic relations through targeted bilateral frameworks.
According to reports from Reuters and the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the UAE and Colombia officially signed their bilateral CEPA on July 18, 2026. This landmark pact represents the UAE’s first major bilateral trade agreement with a South American nation, marking a significant milestone in its broader strategy to expand economic ties beyond the Gulf region. Colombian media outlet El Tiempo noted that the agreement is designed to eliminate or significantly reduce tariffs on a wide range of goods, improve market access, and foster joint investment in key sectors. These sectors include agriculture, renewable energy, tourism, and infrastructure, offering a robust framework for long-term economic cooperation and non-oil trade expansion.
Just two days later, on July 20, 2026, the UAE finalized another major CEPA, this time with South Korea, to deepen economic and strategic cooperation. As reported by Reuters and the Yonhap News Agency, this agreement features substantial tariff reductions designed to benefit both nations. Under the terms of the pact, South Korea will eliminate tariffs on 92.8% of its imports, including crude oil, over a multi-year transition period. In return, Gulf News reported that the UAE will remove tariffs on 91.2% of its imports, which is expected to significantly benefit South Korean exports of automobiles, auto parts, electronics, and defense equipment. This agreement represents a substantial deepening of energy and defense ties between Seoul and Abu Dhabi.
These bilateral agreements highlight the UAE’s active trade diplomacy and its broader strategy to expand economic ties beyond the Gulf region. By securing access to South American agricultural and renewable energy sectors while simultaneously strengthening industrial, energy, and defense ties with South Korea, the UAE is positioning itself as a pivotal hub for global commerce. For businesses in these partner nations, the reduction of tariff barriers offers a more predictable and lucrative environment for cross-border trade and joint ventures. The dual signings demonstrate how the UAE is leveraging CEPAs to secure critical supply chains, from energy resources to agricultural imports, while opening up new markets for its non-oil goods and services.
