India has strategically navigated global trade challenges by actively negotiating with the European Union to open its market for seafood exports, a move that has helped the country overcome the impact of steep US tariffs. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted that this proactive approach contributed to a significant 12-14% growth in seafood exports last year, despite prevailing global uncertainties.
The decision by the United States to impose a 50% tariff on Indian seafood had a substantial impact on exports. In response, India engaged directly with the EU, addressing regulatory bottlenecks and implementing stringent quality control orders and standards. This concerted effort led to the successful restoration of several previously delisted Indian fishing establishments, with more than 125 now registered and having regained access to the large and stable European market.
Minister Goyal emphasized the critical importance of the EU market, citing its massive import demand. India’s strategy is centered on securing long-term trade opportunities through free trade agreements and global partnerships, underscoring the nation’s commitment to diversifying its export destinations and building resilience against unilateral trade barriers. This strategic pivot not only mitigated the adverse effects of US tariffs but also solidified India’s position in a key global market, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted trade diplomacy.
