The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) plays a pivotal role in combating counterfeit goods and transnational crime, ensuring that India remains a leader in global trade. With its transparent initiatives, including the launch of an online customs portal and public awareness campaigns, CBIC fosters greater accountability and public trust. It has also intensified international cooperation, engaging in agreements with neighboring countries and global bodies such as the World Customs Organization (WCO), strengthening enforcement against cross-border crime.
In addition to transparency and cooperation, CBIC’s efforts extend to legal reforms, capacity building, and sustainable development initiatives. The Customs (Amendment) Act of 2022 strengthened CBIC’s powers, enabling the use of advanced technologies and tighter penalties to tackle smuggling and counterfeit operations. Furthermore, CBIC promotes trade facilitation through risk-based clearance systems and blockchain technology. The agency’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact through energy-efficient systems and solar panel installations demonstrates its dedication to sustainable trade practices, while its robust training programs enhance the skills of customs officers for future challenges.
