The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) plays a key role in combating counterfeit goods and transnational crime in Uganda. As the primary agency for enforcing customs and trade laws, URA has implemented various initiatives to prevent the flow of counterfeit goods, including a public awareness campaign and an online portal for submitting customs declarations. These efforts enhance the transparency and efficiency of the customs clearance process and promote public compliance with regulations.

URA has also strengthened international cooperation, working with neighboring countries like Kenya to combat cross-border crime and sharing intelligence to curb the spread of counterfeit goods. The agency’s adoption of advanced technology, such as a blockchain-based tracking system for goods and a risk-based approach to customs clearance, has improved trade facilitation. Additionally, URA’s capacity-building efforts, environmental sustainability projects, and joint operations with the Uganda Police Force have significantly contributed to the fight against counterfeit trade. In 2023, URA seized counterfeit goods worth over UGX 1 billion, highlighting its commitment to protecting legitimate trade.
