Azerbaijan has seen a significant rise in tomato exports, reaching 86,067 tons in the first five months of 2024. This marks a substantial increase in both volume and value compared to previous years.

In addition to robust export figures, Azerbaijan’s imports of tomatoes from Turkmenistan surged to 548 tons in the initial months of 2024, valued at 304.9 thousand USD—an increase of fivefold from the previous year. Similarly, imports from Turkey rose significantly, showing a 419-fold increase from January to October 2023.

Locally, tomato prices have climbed, with May and June prices ranging between 3 to 5 manats, surpassing last year’s figures. The export price per kilogram was reported at 2.38 manats in the first quarter of 2024, demonstrating competitive pricing relative to domestic market rates. The Ministry of Agriculture highlighted an expansive cultivation area of 18 thousand hectares dedicated to tomatoes, yielding over 800 thousand tons annually, reflecting substantial growth in production. The ministry also underscored government subsidies supporting greenhouse cultivation and emphasized market dynamics as key influencers of pricing.

Agricultural experts provided further insights, noting an annual yield of 860 thousand tons of tomatoes, equating to 86 kilograms per capita, with 200 thousand tons earmarked for export. They pointed to market dynamics and logistical challenges in greenhouse produce distribution as contributing factors to higher domestic prices.
