Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export industry is thriving, with exports to South Korea surpassing $164 million in the first half of the year. This impressive 55% increase from the previous year highlights South Korea as a key market for Vietnam, second only to China.
The strong performance was driven by significant gains in key products, including bananas, which saw a three-fold increase to $35.4 million, mangoes up 72% to $24 million, and sesame seeds growing by 62% to nearly $30 million. Additionally, exports of dragon fruit, watermelon, shiitake mushrooms, durian, and pineapple recorded growth rates ranging from 40% to 217%. Vietnamese almond exports saw an extraordinary surge, increasing 224-fold to nearly $2 million.
The robust growth is attributed to a rebound in South Korean consumer demand and the competitive pricing of Vietnamese fruits, positioning Vietnam as a strong contender in the global trade market. According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, South Korea’s import turnover from Vietnam is expected to reach $190 million within the first seven months, with further growth anticipated during the holiday season.
Vietnamese exporters are capitalizing on the vast opportunities in the South Korean market, particularly in bananas, where the market size exceeds $300 million annually. With competition from neighboring countries like Thailand and the Philippines, Vietnamese exporters are committed to meeting South Korea's stringent food safety, hygiene, and packaging standards. Strategic collaborations between Korean supermarket giants like Lotte and Emart and Vietnamese agricultural producers are further enhancing trade relations and ensuring the consistent quality of exports.
