South Africa is reinforcing its position as a global leader in fruit exports, with projections for 2025 showcasing significant growth in apple and pear shipments. According to Hortgro, the country is set to export 51.3 million cartons of apples and 21.1 million cartons of pears this season, marking a 5% and 4% increase, respectively, over the previous year.

The expansion in apple exports is fueled by increased production from recently established orchards, improved weather conditions, and the adoption of high-yielding varieties. A strong recovery from 2023’s hail and flood challenges further highlights the resilience of South Africa’s fruit industry. The 2024 apple season ended on a high, with a 12% increase in shipments compared to the prior year.

Pears are also seeing robust growth, with favorable climate conditions like cooler nights promoting superior fruit quality and color development. Early-harvested varieties, including Bon Chretien, Rosemarie, and Celina, have shown exceptional quality, reinforcing the country’s reputation for premium fresh produce.

Noteworthy contributions to the apple sector include increases in popular varieties like Royal Gala and Gala (+6%), Cripps Pink (Pink Lady, +7%), and Flash Gala (Bigbucks, +24%). Pear varieties like Forelle and Abate Fetel are forecasted to grow by 7%, with summer varieties such as Cheeky and Sempre also contributing to the positive outlook.

On the logistics front, collaborative efforts between the fruit industry and Transnet have resulted in notable infrastructure upgrades at the Port of Cape Town, enhancing operational efficiency. Investments in new equipment, improved maintenance services, and increased staffing have already reduced delays and improved productivity, ensuring seamless export processes.

South Africa’s growing export volumes reflect its pivotal role in global trade, with its high-quality apples and pears reaching diverse international markets. The continued emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and efficient trade practices solidifies the country’s standing as a reliable trade partner in the agricultural sector.
