The Netherlands continues to solidify its position as a leading export powerhouse within the European Union (EU), ranking as the third-largest exporter of goods and services in 2023, a position it has maintained for two consecutive years. This achievement underscores the country’s significant role in driving European trade and economic growth.
According to recent data, the Netherlands trails only Germany and France in total exports, with Italy and Ireland completing the top five. Notably, when considering just goods, the Netherlands rises to second place, highlighting the strength of its goods export sector.
The Dutch economy has seen a remarkable increase in service exports, which grew from nearly 15% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2000 to over 25% in 2023. This growth is reflective of a broader trend within the EU, where service exports have nearly doubled over the same period.
Goods exports remain a cornerstone of the Dutch economy, contributing over 63% to the national GDP in 2023. Key sectors driving this success include business services, chemical and pharmaceutical products, food and luxury items, and machinery and electrical equipment.
Importantly, the Netherlands continues to export more than it imports, resulting in a positive contribution to its GDP. In 2023, total exports amounted to nearly 89% of the GDP, significantly higher than the EU average of 53%. This strong export performance is a testament to the Netherlands’ robust trade infrastructure and its strategic position within the global market.
