In an effort to strengthen economic ties across emerging markets, major East Asian economies are actively advancing negotiations for bilateral Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). According to reports from The Japan Times, The Daily Star, and the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan and Bangladesh have made progress in their negotiations toward a bilateral EPA. The discussions are primarily aimed at securing tariff-free market access and strengthening supply chain resilience between the two nations. This trade framework is particularly critical as Bangladesh prepares for its scheduled graduation from the United Nations’ Least Developed Country (LDC) status, which will alter its current preferential trade terms. The negotiations cover several key areas, including trade in goods, customs procedures, investment promotion, intellectual property rights, and electronic commerce.
Simultaneously, South Korea is expanding its economic footprint in Southern Europe. Reports from the Korea Herald, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea, and the Tanjug News Agency confirm that South Korea and Serbia have held talks to finalize their own bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement. This pact is designed to deepen trade, investment, and supply chain cooperation between the two countries. A primary objective of the agreement is to facilitate South Korean investments in Serbia’s automotive and technology sectors. In return, the agreement aims to expand market access for Serbian agricultural and industrial exports entering the East Asian market, establishing a more robust framework for bilateral commerce.
These parallel negotiations reflect a broader strategic effort by Japan and South Korea to diversify their trade networks and secure resilient supply chains. For Bangladesh, the EPA with Japan represents a vital mechanism to maintain competitive market access post-LDC graduation. For Serbia, the agreement with South Korea offers an opportunity to integrate into global automotive and technology supply chains while boosting its agricultural exports. Both agreements underscore the growing importance of structured bilateral frameworks in navigating evolving global trade dynamics.
