Ireland has once again demonstrated its strong commitment to enhancing global food safety and agricultural trade by contributing €200,000 (approximately CHF 190,000) to the Standards and Trade Development Facility. This generous support is set to further advance the facility's projects and programs, which are designed to help developing economies and the world's least-developed countries gain better access to international and regional markets.
World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed deep appreciation for Ireland's ongoing contributions, highlighting how this financial support is instrumental in empowering small-scale farmers and producers in developing regions. By assisting them in meeting important sanitary and phytosanitary standards, these communities are better positioned to participate in global trade, thereby increasing their incomes while contributing to global food safety and security.
Ireland's Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Sean Fleming, TD, proudly acknowledged the nation's enduring commitment to the mission of the Standards and Trade Development Facility. Since 2007, Ireland's contributions have now surpassed €2.9 million (CHF 2.8 million). Fleming noted, "Ireland takes great pride in supporting the essential work of the facility, which promotes safe, sustainable, and inclusive global trade."
The Standards and Trade Development Facility is a collaborative global partnership involving key organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the World Bank Group, the World Organisation for Animal Health, and the World Trade Organization. The facility's efforts are focused on addressing the evolving needs of the global community, driving inclusive trade, and contributing to sustainable economic growth, food security, and poverty reduction, all in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Developing countries and the world's least-developed nations are strongly encouraged to apply for grants related to sanitary and phytosanitary projects through the Standards and Trade Development Facility. To date, over 250 projects have been funded, providing significant benefits to these regions and furthering their integration into the global economy.
