Interview with Richard Rankka of SJE-Rhombus

Q: How did you get started in this business?
A: I began working for SJE-Rhombus 23 years ago as a technical customer service support person. My background in electronic technology is what helped me obtain that position. As I began supporting our customers I quickly moved into a sales support role and then into sales management. I currently serve as the International Business Development Director with a focus on Europe and Latin America.

Q: Can you describe your customers / what type of customers do you have?
A: We have two primary types of business partners; wholesale distributors and original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s). Our typical wholesale distributor is in the business of supplying water and wastewater equipment such as pumps, valves, and other pump systems equipment. Our OEM’s typically manufacture pumps for the water and/or wastewater industry.

Q: What are some of your “keys to success” in building your customer base?
A: Our company is well known for manufacturing high quality products and providing outstanding customer service. We pride ourselves on these two qualities and it has helped us rise above our competition. We have been in the business since 1975 and we have customers that have been with us since the beginning. Although our company has grown dramatically since the beginning, we focus on maintaining our high level of quality and support our business partners expect and deserve.

Q: Is there anything about your business that you feel makes it special?
A: The answer to this questions is easy, Employee Stock Ownership or ESOP. Our company is 100{bfa08a400c7550404055ff04715e84c9172815d33c25eb3b84e230636ecdc007} employee owned and this benefits our business partners greatly. The success of our company is impacted by the efforts of each individual in our company. Every member of our team has ownership and this creates a wonderful work environment.

Q: Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? In the next ten years?
A: Our mission is to provide innovative control products and wastewater treatment products worldwide with a superior combination of quality, value, and service. Our growth has come from market expansion (domestic and international), development of new products, and through key acquisitions. Today we hold a large share of the North American market and are seeing great growth in international markets. We believe this can continue as long as we hold true to our values and provide exceptional customer service to our business partners.
