Interview with Moshe Alkalay of Hi Tech International Group

Q: Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself (personally and professionally)?
A: I am 60 years old. Married + 2 boys in collage.

After graduating in 1985 I worked for a department store as buyer for few years, then moved to NY and managed a moving company.

In 1989 I founded Hi Tech International Group with a partner (I bought him out in 2001), moved to Florida and continue to manage this company. Our focus has always been to deal in good faith and help our clients make the BEST choices.

Q: How did you get started in this business?
A: The business started with the idea of selling USED medical systems that typically would cost  hundreds of thousands dollars new – for a fraction of original cost. My partner at the time was a freight forwarder and he moved a few systems and realize the potential of this market.

Q: Can you describe your customers / what type of customers do you have?
A: Our customers are small hospitals, imaging centers and doctors worldwide. In our 27 years in business we have repeat business and word to mouth advertising on top of marketing and paid advertising.

For the first 12 years we sold mostly overseas, at present our domestic and international sales are almost even.

Q: What are some of your “keys to success” in building your customer base?
A: The will to unconditionally help customers make the best choice and emphasis on service and reliability.

Q: Is there anything about your business that you feel makes it special?
A: See above.

Q: Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? In the next ten years?
A: The future of USED medical equipment is heavily affected by OEMs who shut the doors for import by many countries.

When I sell a used piece the OEMs loose a sale of a new product and they lobby to prevent our competition. That and lower margins force us to be sharper and move more goods. We do our best to continue the growth and keep bottom lines healthy. We always look to add equipment to our mix and possibly also offer NEW systems. We will keep the marketing campaigns worldwide and will grow our customer base. Adding sales people and services will also grow our sells and bottom-line.
