Q: Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself (personally and professionally)?
I started in business research and strategy consulting before joining International Enterprise (IE) Singapore to promote the growth of commodities and derivatives sector in Singapore through policy recommendations and business facilitation. I now help to drive the business development efforts for Steinweg Group in Asia Pacific.
Q: How did you get started in this business?
The Steinweg Group established our first Asian office in 1984 in Singapore. Since then, Steinweg has been steadily building up and expanding our network in the region, with have offices and operations in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam.
Q: Can you describe your customers / what type of customers do you have?
The main logistics services we provide include warehousing, stevedoring, customs clearance, third party inspection, forwarding and chartering. Depending on customer requirement, we are also prepared to engage suitable facilities and technology to provide other value-added services such as crushing, blending, screening and repacking of commodities, etc. The entire value chain enables us to offer one-stop services for the safe transport and transfer of cargoes worldwide.
While metals and minerals form a key part of our business, agricultural soft commodities is another big pillar and we are also growing a significant presence in the plastics, chemicals and project cargo space.
Our customers are multinational companies including producers, smelters, traders, fabricators, manufacturers, distributors and brokers. Banks and other financial institutions also count on our services for trade transactions and financing purposes.
Q: What are some of your “keys to success” in building your customer base?
Our independence being highly valued by international traders and banks is one of the key reasons why the industry regards us as the preferred partner-of-choice. Over the years, we have built a reputation for our strict impartiality and absolute confidentiality. As a privately-held and independent service provider, we are truly neutral in all transactions of the commodity trade that we handle. We do not have any conflict of interests with our clients. This, coupled with our long history and track record, has enabled us to build strong ties with many customers across developed as well as emerging markets.
Q: Is there anything about your business that you feel makes it special?
The Steinweg brand is a mark of excellence. Our track record goes back to our founding in 1847. In the last 170 years, our company has grown from its origins in Rotterdam to a vast network of more than 100 offices across the world. Our door-to-door logistics services are widely accepted and recognized for their quality and standard, by not only physical traders but also leading international exchanges, financial institutions, insurance companies, regulators and government agencies. Steinweg warehouses are approved and accredited as delivery points by the most important and leading commodities exchanges and associations globally. Our warehouse documents are considered the ‘gold standard’ across the industry.
Q: Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? In the next ten years?
As an independent privately-held company, we take a long-term perspective in business. We have the flexibility to make strategic decisions and investment commitments and
have a track record of taking that first step and being the industry pioneer in a number of important trading hubs in Asia.
The next 3-5 years will be critical as we are dedicating significant efforts and resources to this region, as we have been doing continuously for the past three decades.
In the next 10 years, we see ourselves transformed to evolve with the shifting landscape of commodity trading as well as changing patterns of the global supply chain.
