Q: Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself (personally and professionally)?
A: My career after college began as a nuclear engineer, nuclear weapons officer and submarine officer in the U.S. Navy. I have degrees in Business Administration and Accounting, and I am a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
I founded ICAN Software Corporation in 1999 and have 20 years of experience programming, selling and implementing enterprise software solutions (ERP, CRM, MRP). In 2001, ICAN Software Corporation began programming add-in software modules for Microsoft Dynamics GP including our InvestmentAssets product which is used by many family offices, investment holding companies, endowment firms, and foundations.
Q: How did you get started in this business?
A: I was hired by a local CPA firm to lead their enterprise software consulting team. After a few years, that CPA firm decided to get out of the consulting business after the Arthur Anderson consulting conflict of interest event. They asked me to form a separate consulting company and take over responsibility for their ERP software consulting clients. I agreed and that was the origin of ICAN Software Corporation. We began focused on Microsoft Dynamics GP but over the years we have become certified on other Cloud business software solutions such as Xero and the fastest growing ERP software Acumatica.
Q: Can you describe your customers / what type of customers do you have?
A: We have a variety of different customer types from small to very large. The industries we have clients in include Manufacturing, eCommerce, Professional Services, Non Profits, Agriculture, Investments, Financial Services, and many more.
We appeal to those companies who want to take advantage of the ways that modern technology can improve the operations of organizations. Those customers looking for enterprise software that is multi-currency, multi-lingual, cloud-based and easily customizable to fit the needs for larger organizations. Those customers who want enterprise software that works out of the box with web services for credit card processing, shipping, sales tax, etc.
Q: What are some of your “keys to success” in building your customer base?
A: Quality. We ensure that our clients receive high quality consulting from staff who have high level of expertise in broad range of technology AND accounting skills/knowledge. We go the extra mile to make sure that our clients get better service than anywhere else in the least amount of billable hours.
Word of mouth. Our clients refer us to new clients…and that is always the easiest way to obtain new clients.
Public speaking engagements. We have spoken at numerous world-wide technical conferences and have built a large social media presence.
Social Media. We utilize LinkedIn ads for targeted markting.
Q: Is there anything about your business that you feel makes it special?
A: Our business is in an industry that is constantly changing. In order to succeed in enterprise software technology consulting, you need staff that are able to constantly rapidly learn new skills and stay on top of those changes. This industry needs the right balance of both business acumen and technology savvy. We have built a team with those skill sets and this has allowed us to succeed as our industry shifts to “Business In The Cloud”. We have focused on this new area of consultancy as a new and growing part of our practice.
Q: Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? In the next ten years?
A: Our business is continuing to grow both this year and for future years. More and more firms are realizing the benefits of moving their business operations to the Cloud. As a firm that moved all of our infrastructure to the Cloud years ago, we are uniquely qualified to help others make the same transition. We have a variety of solutions that we are certified on and can guide our clients as to which solution is the best fit for their organization. As a CPA firm focused on business software solutions, we are dedicated to that mission.
