Inaugural Salford Professorial Lecture: Professor Mo Saraee

In the modern world, data powers everything that we do. From the dawn of civilization through to 2003, 5 exabytes of information were created. In 2020, this colossal amount of information is created every 2 days! Data Science is transforming this ocean of data into a sea of knowledge.

The excitement in data science is in the journey towards achieving three significant kinds of results: discovery, insights, and innovation. In this inaugural lecture Mo Saraee, Professor of Data Science, will discuss the contributions and impacts made by data science and big data to humanity and businesses.

Can Data Science help prevent poverty?

Can it help to prevent crimes before they happen?

Can it drive driverless cars?

Can it assist with grief and mental health?

Can it help cities better prioritize limited resources to improve lives of citizens and achieve equity?

While the potential of Data Science and Big data is enormous, turning this potential into tangible social, technical and economic impact, takes cross-disciplinary training; new methods; scalable data and a computational infrastructure. Professor Saraee will also discuss lessons learned from working on a number Data Science projects over the past few years and highlight the opportunities, as well as challenges faced in this amazing field.
