November 15, 2017—Frederick, MD Chris Tindal, former Director for Operational Energy working for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, has joined the Advanced Biofuels USA board of directors. Advanced Biofuels USA, an educational nonprofit dedicated to the understanding, development and use of advanced biofuels, welcomes Tindal with his extensive understanding of military use of biofuels, especially of the Navy’s Great Green Fleet program.
“Chris not only brings extraordinary experiences from his work with the U.S. Navy, setting energy policy and promoting the adoption of alternative fuels and renewable energy resources,” explained President and Executive Director, Joanne Ivancic, “He’s also a thoughtful and generous individual. He will be an asset to the organization in many ways.”
“Chris has been in the thick of all things biofuels over the past 10 years and more,” she continued, “particularly as the Navy leader of the pioneering U.S. Department of Agriculture/ U.S. Department of Energy/ U.S. Navy Alternative Fuels Initiative which developed programs to launch the advanced biofuels industry. In doing so, he has developed intergovernmental, international, and industry relationships throughout the energy field and will have well-honed insights to share as Advanced Biofuels USA moves into its 10th year.”
Chris Tindal started his federal civil service career in 1988 at Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) in Charleston, South Carolina working in Facilities Management, Operations, and Energy Management. Early in his job as the Utilities and Energy Management Division Director, Chris created, developed and led the innovative Utilities and Energy Cost Saver Tiger Team, which saved the Navy over $10 million. He moved up to NAVFAC Headquarters in Washington, DC in 2006 to work in the Department of Navy’s Energy Program as the Energy Operations Director.
In 2008, Chris became the Director for Operational Energy working for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy. In this position, Chris was in charge of setting energy policy and direction for the Department of the Navy and promoting the adoption of alternative fuels and renewable energy resources.
Tindal led the Great Green Fleet effort, overseeing the planning and logistics, discussing interoperability concerns with alternative fuel use by the U.S. Navy with many countries.
A Navy man for over 40 years Tindal, retired as a Captain in the Navy Reserves in 2010 and continues to pursue his career as a Professional Engineer and a Certified Energy Manager and is teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities at Queensland University of Technology.
Originally from Alabama, Chris currently lives in South Carolina.
Well-respected in the international biofuels community, Tindal has been named in the peer-selected competition for the “Top 100 People in the Bioeconomy” Awards by the Biofuels Digest from 2013 through 2017.
