In a promising development for the Chilean agricultural sector, the Kiwi Committee of Frutas de Chile has announced an anticipated 7% increase in kiwifruit exports for this season. Carlos Cruzat, President of the Committee, revealed that the organization has revised its projections following a comprehensive evaluation of the season’s harvest volumes.
“Initially, we forecasted an export volume of 130,000 tons before the harvest began in March,” Cruzat explained. “However, after reviewing the total volume harvested, we found our production to be 7% higher than expected. The delayed start to the season contributed positively, allowing the kiwifruits to grow larger and heavier. Consequently, we have re-estimated our exports to 139,000 tons.”
The season’s start was delayed by 12 days, which is consistent with the trend observed in other fruits. Cruzat noted that this new estimate aligns with Chile’s current productive capabilities, reflecting the hectares in full production.
“All kiwifruit-producing regions in Chile reported higher volumes than previously estimated, with the exception of the northern area of the O'Higgins region, which saw a decrease,” Cruzat added.
As of week 23 of 2024, Chile has shipped 77,023 tons of kiwifruit. The United States, Europe, and Latin America have shown strong demand for Chilean kiwifruit, contrasting with a noticeable decline in the Far East, particularly in China.
“Our campaign for conventional kiwifruit is now complete, and we are transitioning to the distribution of fruit stored in chambers,” said Cruzat. “The exports to date represent just over half of the total volume we anticipate shipping globally this season.”
Looking ahead, Cruzat expressed optimism about surpassing the 139,000-ton mark in future seasons. “We are confident that new kiwifruit plantations, which have been recently established, will soon enter commercial production and contribute to increased export volumes,” he said.
These positive developments underscore the resilience and growth potential of Chile's kiwifruit sector, further solidifying its position in the global market.
