The Thai government is encouraging local pet food companies to capitalize on the growing demand in Taiwan and Japan, positioning these markets as prime destinations for expanded trade. With close proximity and increasing consumer interest, Thailand’s pet food sector is set to boost its exports, strengthening its role in global trade.
At the Taipei Pets Show in July 2024, Thailand secured over $2.5 million in orders from 200 Taiwanese importers, demonstrating strong market potential. Last year, Thailand exported $87.18 million worth of pet food to Taiwan, making it the top supplier of dog and cat food with a 33.05% market share. Thai officials are optimistic that continued efforts can further elevate these numbers, particularly with an emphasis on pet snacks and innovative lifestyle pet products.
In Japan, the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) in Hiroshima is urging local businesses to focus on the booming cat food market, as cats have become the favored pets. Japan’s growing pet industry presents a significant opportunity, with Thailand already ranking as the third-largest pet food supplier to the country. In 2023, Thailand’s pet food exports to Japan were valued at $330 million, and the market for high-quality, specialized products is only set to grow.
This push for increased exports is directed at Thailand’s 5,009 registered pet-related businesses, including 2,138 pet food producers. With a collective capital of nearly 100 billion baht ($27.5 billion), the Thai pet industry is well-prepared to meet the expanding demand from Taiwan and Japan, reinforcing its global trade presence and contributing to the growth of international commerce.
