Peruvian fruit exports have demonstrated resilience and significant growth in the first half of 2024, despite facing challenges from adverse weather conditions. The country’s fruit sector continues to thrive, with notable achievements and a positive outlook for the rest of the year.
Avocados have remained a cornerstone of Peru's agro-export sector, holding the top position with an 18% share of total exports. Although producers faced challenges with meeting size requirements, avocados saw consistent growth in export values. Key markets for Peruvian avocados include the Netherlands, Spain, and the United States.
Table grapes, Peru’s second most important export in the first half of 2024, have shown strong performance. The Ica region continues to be a major production hub, with the United States leading as the top market, followed by Mexico and the Netherlands.
Blueberries experienced an impressive 112% growth, despite disruptions caused by cold weather and late prunings. The United States remains the largest market for Peruvian blueberries, with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom also being significant importers.
Mangoes, the sixth most significant export, face increased competition from Mexico but are expected to rise in production towards the end of 2024. Main export destinations include Europe, especially the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The new Port of Chancay, opening in November, is anticipated to enhance the efficiency of mango exports and facilitate better access to Asian markets.
The upcoming inauguration of the Port of Chancay is highly anticipated, with expectations that it will significantly improve the export logistics for Peruvian fruits, particularly grapes. The port is expected to streamline access to key Asian markets such as China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.
The emphasis is on diversifying export markets and improving logistics infrastructure. Enhancing communication with international buyers and meeting phytosanitary requirements are crucial for expanding market reach and sustaining growth.
Peru’s fruit export sector continues to showcase its strength and adaptability, driving positive trade outcomes and setting the stage for future success in the global market.
