The Informal Working Group on Trade and Gender has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative: the International Prize for Gender Equality in Trade. This esteemed prize is designed to honor and promote the most impactful trade policies, export programs, and Aid for Trade projects that advance the inclusion of women in the global trade sector. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2024.
This initiative presents a significant opportunity for WTO members and observer governments to showcase their dedication to empowering women through trade. By recognizing gender-responsive efforts, the prize highlights initiatives that not only foster equality but also bolster the economic participation of women on a global scale. The prize encourages applicants to demonstrate how their programs provide real opportunities for women in trade. Whether through innovative policy frameworks, specialized support programs, or effective trade facilitation measures, these initiatives should clearly illustrate solutions that advance gender equality.
The prize encompasses four diverse categories that reflect the multifaceted engagement of women in trade. The Female Entrepreneurs category, including female farmers, celebrates women driving change and economic growth. The Sustainable Development and Gender category recognizes initiatives aligning gender equality with sustainable trade practices. The Trade Facilitation category highlights policies that streamline trade processes to benefit women. Lastly, the Services Trade category focuses on women’s involvement and advancement in the services sector. Additionally, a special category, “Youth Empowerment from a Gender Perspective,” will honor initiatives that empower young women and prepare them to excel in the trade sector.
A distinguished judging panel, led by representatives from Cabo Verde, El Salvador, and the United Kingdom, will evaluate the entries and select the most outstanding contributions. The winners will be honored at the WTO’s Public Forum from September 10-13, 2024, in Geneva. This new prize underscores the vital role of women in trade and the positive impact of inclusive policies on global commerce. It’s a call to action for governments to create environments where women can succeed and thrive in trade, driving economic growth and innovation.
Interested parties can find the application form and detailed information on the WTO’s website. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain recognition for advancing gender equality and making a positive impact in the world of trade.
