In a significant move to enhance trade and connectivity, China and Pakistan have inaugurated a new air cargo route linking China's Guizhou province with Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. The route, which launched earlier this week, represents a milestone in the bilateral trade relations between the two countries.
According to a report by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), this is the first air route connecting Guizhou and Pakistan, and notably, it is also the first air freight route linking the province with a country involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The inaugural flight, an all-cargo plane, departed from Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou, carrying six tons of freight including clothing, electronic products, and other commodities. The journey to Karachi was completed in under six hours.
Officials have highlighted the strategic importance of this new route, stating that it will transform Guiyang into a key cargo distribution center in southwest China. Additionally, it will facilitate faster delivery of Pakistan’s quality fresh products to Guizhou.
Earlier this year, in January, the two nations had launched an air cargo route connecting Ezhou Huahu Airport in China’s Hubei province with Lahore, Pakistan’s eastern city. Pakistan’s ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, emphasized that the Lahore-Hubei route marked a significant advancement in bilateral trade and connectivity.
China remains a vital ally and major investor in Pakistan, with ongoing collaboration on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) under the BRI. This flagship project has seen over $65 billion pledged towards the development of roads, railways, and other critical infrastructure in Pakistan.
