Malaysia is poised to begin exporting fresh durian to China in the third quarter of 2024, according to Malaysian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. The announcement, made during the minister's question time in the Dewan Rakyat, marks a significant milestone following the signing of the Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Durian from Malaysia to China on 19 June.
The minister emphasized that only orchards and durian fruit packing facilities that are registered with the Department of Agriculture, comply with myGAP (Good Agricultural Practices) standards, and receive approval from the General Administration of Customs China (GACC) will be permitted to export fresh durian to China. The Department of Agriculture is currently finalizing the Phytosanitary Certificate with GACC and preparing to submit a list of existing durian farms and packaging facilities for approval.
"The ministry anticipates the approval process for registration with GACC to take two to three months," Mohamad Sabu said.
Malaysia has had access to China for durian paste and pulp since 2011, with frozen durian access granted in 2018. Securing approval for the export of fresh durian has been a long-term objective for Malaysia, aiming to meet the growing demand in the Chinese market.
