In a significant move to boost trade relations, Kazakhstan is set to increase its grain exports to China, with a target of reaching 3 million tons. This expansion underscores the growing partnership between the two countries, as highlighted by Kazakh Minister of Agriculture, Aidarbek Saparov, during discussions with Wang Jianjun, Director of the Economy and Trade Department at China’s National Development and Reform Commission.
Kazakhstan and China have a strong and evolving trade relationship, particularly in the agricultural sector. The two nations have already established agreements for the export of 28 different types of crop and livestock products. This new commitment to increase grain exports marks a positive step forward, reflecting the deepening economic cooperation between the countries.
The trade in agricultural products between Kazakhstan and China saw impressive growth in 2023, with a 1.7-fold increase, exceeding $1.3 billion. This upward trend continued in the first half of 2024, with trade volumes reaching $648.1 million—a 12% rise compared to the same period last year. Kazakhstan’s exports to China accounted for $460 million of this total, showcasing the country’s growing role as a key supplier of high-quality agricultural goods.
Minister Saparov expressed Kazakhstan's enthusiasm for expanding its agricultural exports, particularly grain, to meet the increasing demand in the Chinese market. While the initial agreement set the export volume at 2 million tons, Kazakhstan is prepared to further boost this to 3 million tons, demonstrating its commitment to fostering strong, mutually beneficial trade ties.
Wang Jianjun praised Kazakhstan as a strategic partner in the grain sector, emphasizing the importance of ensuring smooth and reliable supplies. The talks also covered logistics and other aspects of grain trade cooperation, further solidifying the robust trade relationship between the two nations.
This expansion of grain exports is a positive development in Kazakhstan-China trade relations, paving the way for continued growth and collaboration in the agricultural sector.
