In a gesture of support for inclusivity and equitable representation, Iceland has announced a contribution of CHF 20,000 to facilitate the participation of government officials from least-developed countries (LDCs) in the upcoming 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC13). Set to take place from 26 to 29 February in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, MC13 holds significant importance for global trade negotiations.
This financial assistance from Iceland will cover travel expenses, including flight tickets and accommodation, for LDC representatives attending MC13. The contribution will be directed to the LDCs Trust Fund, a vital mechanism established for each Ministerial Conference, with multiple WTO members contributing to its funding.
Expressing gratitude for Iceland's support, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the crucial role of active LDC participation in shaping multilateral trade outcomes that address the needs of vulnerable members.
Iceland's WTO Ambassador, Einar Gunnarsson, underscored the importance of ensuring the full participation of all WTO members for fostering an inclusive, rules-based multilateral trading system. He affirmed Iceland's commitment to supporting LDC representation at MC13, ensuring their voices are heard on the global stage.
In addition to this contribution, Iceland's longstanding commitment to the WTO is evident through its cumulative contribution of approximately CHF 825,000 to various WTO trust funds over the past two decades. This ongoing support reflects Iceland's dedication to promoting fairness, inclusivity, and cooperation within the international trade community.
